The Bill Belichick era is officially over for the New England Patriots.
After hosting a press conference Thursday, Belichick said farewell to the organization and the fanbase, which was mostly well received.
While many wondered who would replace the legendary coach, shortly after the announcement, many reports surfaced about Jerod Mayo taking over.
The team worked quickly to get a deal done, as, according to Adam Schefter, Mayo has officially been hired as their new head coach.

Schefter also indicated that, while this move has been made, it will be formally announced at a press conference next week.
Mayo played for the team from 2008-2015 and is very familiar with how the organization is run.
He is a familiar face within the locker room, as he has been their inside linebackers coach since 2019.
Judging by the team’s quick move to hire him, they wanted to act quickly, hiring someone internal rather than conducting an outside search.
Mayo will now have the entire offseason to work with his new team, hoping to bring them better success than they had during the 2023 season.
The Patriots have a lot of decisions to make over the next several months, with the quarterback position being one of the most paramount.
Knowing they have a new head coach locked down is a step in the right direction for this team.
Can Mayo use his NFL experience and the knowledge he learned from Belichick to make a true difference for the Patriots?
This is an organization that has grown accustomed to success, and perhaps a new coach is the way to get them back to that place.
